For a relaxing and fun evening, laugh with these suggestions.
Laughter, they say, is the best medicine. For anyone wanting a chuckle, giggle, or good hearty laugh, these films are a great way to get it. The Importance of Being Earnest In this comedy of errors, set in early 20th century England, John Worthing spends his time as John Worthing in the country and as his fictitious younger brother, Earnest, in London. After learning of John’s lie and his young and pretty ward, his good friend, Algernon, decides to visit John’s country house while John is away and presents himself as Earnest. This causes confusion to two young women who both think they are engaged to Earnest Worthing in a humorous unfolding of events. Starring Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Frances O’Connor, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench, this film is laughter waiting to happen -- from the language, to the pretzel of a story about a non-existent character whose name means truthful, to the smile rendering conclusion. Fun with Dick and Jane At the sudden loss of his job as VP of communications, Dick Harper finds it difficult to support his family and afford his house. In a desperate attempt to rectify the situation, Dick and his wife, Jane, resort to robbery. With their lawn repossessed, a hole in the yard where a hot tub was supposed to be, and a young son who speaks with a perfect Spanish accent, Dick and Jane bring fun and silliness to life. Jim Carrey stars as Dick alongside Téa Leoni starring as Jane. Together they become seriously ridiculous. Making light of a serious situation, this film tickles the funny bone. Sydney White Loosely based on the fairy tale of Snow White, this charming movie follows Sydney to university, where she tries for a prestigious sorority, but finds herself making friends where she had not expected. The counterparts to the seven dwarfs, the boys who befriend her, add their own unique personalities and viewpoints to the film. And with Amanda Bynes as Sydney, a tomboy who does not quite fit in a sorority, the movie has a great mix of sweetness and comedy. 17 Again A movie about second chances, 17 Again brings Mike O’Donnell back to high school, allowing him to pick up his life and finish what he had started. Paired with his smart and slightly neurotic best friend, Ned, he works to achieve the goals he started all those years ago. Matthew Perry stars as adult Mike, whose life is not what he had planned. When Mike goes back to high school, Zac Efron stars as 37-year-old Mike in his 17-year-old body, resulting in an awkward return to school. Thomas Lennon plays Ned, who reluctantly agrees to pretend to be Mike’s father and adds a degree of silliness and slapstick to the film. That Thing You Do Based on a true story, That Thing You Do follows the rise and fall of The Wonders, a sixties group that reached success with one particular song and became a one hit wonder. Starring Tom Hanks as Mr. White, The Wonders’ manager, and Tom Everett Scott, Jonathon Schaech, Steve Zahn and Ethan Embry as the band, this film presents an enjoyable story with catchy music throughout.
