Comedy Movie DVD Releases for December 2009Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Bradley Cooper in New Films This Month
Fans of Amy Adams get a double dose of comedy when two of her best films come out on DVD.
December proves to be a big month for stars with a glittering selection of favorite actors appearing in comedy film of all kinds – perfect as gifts or for personal enjoyment. Look for action-adventure (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian), biographical comedy (Julie & Julia), dark humor (World’s Greatest Dad), raunchy comedy (The Hangover), and slapstick (Mel Brooks Collection) in this month’s selections. Amy Adams fans get twice as lucky this month with her portrayal of Amelia Earhart in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and as Julie Powell in Julie & Julia. December 1 Comedy DVD Release: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) Widescreen and Blu-ray A former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History (where all the exhibits magically come to life at night) finds that some of his “friends” have been shipped off to the Smithsonian Institution. Retired to the archives and locked away in crates, his former buddies need his assistance before evildoers plan to take over the museum, and possibly the world. Some favorites from the first movie (Night at the Museum) appear along with new additions in this funnier-than-the-original sequel.
December 8 Comedy DVD Releases: Julie & Julia and World’s Greatest Dad Julie & Julia (2009) Widescreen and Blu-ray Based on the book by Julie Powell, a young woman wants desperately to be a published author. She decides to cook her way through Julia Child’s first book about French cooking. Her blog intertwines with Child’s own story, which is a love affair with food and her husband. Others have imitated Child’s peculiar way of speaking and moving, but Meryl Streep’s amazing portrayal provides more tribute than mockery.
World’s Greatest Dad (2009) Widescreen and Blu-ray A high school teacher dreams of being a rich and famous writer. Meanwhile he slaves away in a job where he is unappreciated by the administration, his students, his son, and his girlfriend (another teacher at the school). A freak accident suddenly changes his life and makes all his wishes come true. However, he must live a lie in order to obtain this dream. In this black comedy, the humor is warped and the characters intentionally unlikable, which gives the film much of its irreverent charm.
December 15 Comedy DVD Releases: The Hangover and The Mel Brooks Collection The Hangover (2009) R-Rated, Unrated, and Blu-ray A wild bachelor party in Las Vegas turns disastrous when after a drunken night the groomsmen awake to find the groom missing. The groomsmen need to sober up and retrace their steps in an effort to find their lost buddy and keep his fiancé from finding out about their misadventure. It’s a crude, rude race against time.
The Mel Brooks Collection (2009) Blu-ray Actor, writer, composer, producer, director Mel Brooks has created a vast assortment of comic content over his long career in show business. This collection includes Blu-ray versions of eight comedy spoofs that he directed, plus To Be Or Not To Be, which Brooks did not direct, but served as actor and producer. Among this collection: Blazing Saddles (1974), Spaceballs (1987), Young Frankenstein (1974), High Anxiety (1977), History of the World: Part I (1981), Robin Hood Men in Tights (1993), Silent Movie (1976), To Be Or Not To Be (1983), and The Twelve Chairs (1970).
