The Unrated release of the 1994 film by the Farrelly Brothers promised 6 more minutes of never before seen footage. In retrospect, 6 minutes doesn’t sound like much, but a majority of the extended scenes destroy the original value of the film. For the scenes that do work, overall they seem unnecessary and make Dumb and Dumber Unrated weak in comparison to the original.
Dumb and Dumber Unrated Pros and Cons
How can nine scenes tarnish one of the funniest movies of all time? Listed are the pros and cons of the Unrated additional scenes to Dumb and Dumber.
1. Dead Bird - Con
In the first extended scene, we actually hear Mental break the neck of Petey, Harry and Lloyd’s pet bird. In the original, the comic line of, “Petey, he’s dead… his head fell off” was all we really needed to hear. The fact that we actually see Mental grab the bird, hear the cracking bones, and see the look of disgust on Shay’s face is just disturbing.
2. Angry Waitress - Con
In the diner, the waitress’s hatred for her job is forcibly obvious when she overreacts to the “Excuse me, Flo” crack. Harry tells her his soda’s flat and doesn’t have any bubbles in it and Flo proceeds to blow into his straw. She asks, “Happy now?” and storms off. The audience is then left in the same awkward state that Harry is: wondering what the hell just happened.
Spit Burger - Con
The next scene is grotesque. In the original release, Harry angers Sea Bass by hitting him with a salt shaker. Sea Bass then approaches their table and hocks some spit into Harry’s burger. The movie was kind enough to pan over to Lloyd’s reaction while Sea Bass spat, adding a fine comedic touch. The Unrated version however, shows the big green wad of tobacco drip out of the redneck’s mouth into the burger and it is absolutely disgusting.
4. The Honeymoon Hotel - Pro
As a change of pace, one of the extended scenes actually worth seeing is this one. Harry and Lloyd shack up in a honeymoon hotel and share a hot tub together, chatting about an ex-girlfriend. In the Unrated version, Lloyd has a glass up to the wall listening to a couple moaning in the next room. “Yeah! Get her!” he says. He tells Harry the only thing that could make the moment any better is if Harry had a nice set of knockers. “It’s a good thing you’re not stacked, Harry, or I’d be bangin’ you right now.” Classic. But I don’t see why it couldn’t have just been in the deleted scenes.
5. Hitchhiker Mental - Con
Another awkward scene extension is when Mental is waiting to hitchhike with Harry and Lloyd. He explains the details of his plan to his female partner, Shay. After that, the Unrated version adds a line of dialogue where Shay says, “Keep your shirt on. I gotta squeeze a lemon.” Then she pulls her pants down and squats.
6. Rest Stop visit from Sea Bass - Con
Once again, this is another awkward scene. The last time we’d seen Sea Bass, he got stuck with Harry and Lloyd’s dinner check and wanted to kill them. All of a sudden, he’s very excited to see Lloyd, not to hurt him, but to engage in “manly love.” There’s too much uncomfortable silence in the stall and the image of Sea Bass’ tiny leopard-skin bikini underwear is a hard image to remove from your mind.
7. Harry Rags Lloyd - Pro
The scene immediately following the rest stop is actually really funny. Harry is making fun of Lloyd for being in the bathroom “with a 6’4” trucker with his pants down.” He tells him “I’ll let you kiss me,” and mimics a truck horn before calling it quits.
8. Mary Pep Talk - Pro
Another funny scene comes right before Lloyd and Harry leave for their dates with Mary. Lloyd goes over the name Mary would receive if he’d marry her: Mrs. Mary Christmas. He also yells at Harry when told she might not be Lloyd’s type. “She is the love of my life. The blood in my veins. We belong together! Til the mountains fall to the sea, til the heavens collide, or until I get sick of her and need to move on.” Then he comments on Harry’s revealing lump in his ski trousers.
9. Toilet Dump - Pro
It’s hard to tell how necessary this last extended scene is. After finding out the toilet won’t flush after he’s already made quite a mess, Harry panics. The Unrated version lets us see what all the banging noises were behind the bathroom door. Finding out that he’s taken the toilet apart and is dumping his poo out the window is a little gross; but telling Mary he’s gargling while doing it is priceless.
