Plenty of bonus features, including a Making Of Featurette, enhance the DVD release of "Step Brothers."

When a divorced mother (Mary Steenburgen) of a 39-year-old slacker son (Will Ferrell) and a widower (Richard Jenkins) with his immature 40-year-old son (John C. Reilly) decide to wed, the two new step brothers have a terrible time getting along with each other. In this crude comedy, the brothers evolve from foes to friends to foes to friends again in a script that surprises viewers with its outrageous comedy, rather than its predictable storyline.

An over-achieving younger brother (Adam Scott) and his over-sexed wife (Kathryn Hahn) complicate the already difficult family situation. Produced by Jimmy Miller and Judd Apatow and directed by Adam McKay, the silly Step Brothers becomes even more enjoyable with the bonus features included on the DVD.

Step Brothers Commentary

Jon Brion scored the commentary as well as the film. Comments (and singing) by stars Ferrell, Reilly, director McKay, and NBA star Baron Davis highlight this feature, which includes information on the infamous drum scene in which Ferrell displays a $25,000 set of prosthetic testicles to defile a drum set.

Extended and Deleted Scenes

Theatrical and extended versions of Step Brothers are included on the DVD, with the extra eight minutes on the extended version adding a few additional laughs, particularly during a lengthy dinner scene. Extended and deleted scenes include some hit or miss improvisational work from Ferrell and Reilly, including a delightful Christmas Eve mishap and an unfunny night-vision episode. An extended office scene includes two typically unfunny subjects (heart attacks and genitalia) presented in a very funny way.

Line-O-Rama and Gag Reel

As with other Apatow DVDs, an extensive Line-O-Rama features alternate lines for the same scene. It’s quite entertaining watching these variations and choosing the winner (which may or may not have been the one selected for the final cut). This typical Gag Reel shows the actors flubbing lines and purposely causing mischief on the set.

Step Brothers Music Video

The music video “Boats ‘N Hoes” stars Ferrell, Reilly, and two less-than-perfect women in bikinis in a highly offensive rap song onboard a boat. The song’s offensiveness, however, factors into its humor within the context of the movie.

The Making Of Step Brothers

A 22-minute featurette, “The Making of Step Brothers” provides more entertainment and a few glimpses behind the scenes with comments from the actors, director McKay, and producer Apatow. Steenburgen makes an impact here in describing how her soft-spoken sweetness incites the cast and crew to release her inner shrew.
