High school comedies hit their peak in the 1990's. Featuring large-breasted ditsy blonde woman, good-looking ugly chicks, classic rugged football stars and band geeks, th

However, it also provided us with hours of hilarious laughs as we watched teenagers of all types battle with the daily dilemmas of high school.

So which high school comedies made the top spot and which were left off the list? Take a trip down memory lane with these classic comedies.

5. Ten Things I Hate About You (1999)

Based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this film spins classic Shakespeare into the perfect chick comedy. Popular princess Bianca has been banned from dating by her father until her brainy, stubborn older sister Kat does. This suits Kat, who couldn’t care less about boys, just fine, but is ruining the entire existence of Bianca and the boys chasing after her. What ensures is a comic rat race for both sisters involving the standard high school men: the brainy sweetheart, the rich pretty boy and the dark and handsome outcast. Starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Larisa Oleynik, you’ve never seen Shakespeare like this before.

4. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

Another high school comedy that focuses on one wild night, Can’t Hardly Wait follows several different teenagers through the biggest party of the year. Everyone from the foreign exchange student, the loveable loser, the football jock and of course, the over-developed doesn’t-know-she’s-popular girl crash this somewhat ridiculous but also hilarious high school party.

3. Clueless (1995)

Cher Horowitz is a rich, popular high school girl. Along with her best friend, Dionne, her life consists of shopping, partying and playing matchmaker and makeover to any unassuming victim. From battling with her ex stepbrother, setting up her teachers to get a good grade and befriending the clueless new girl, Cher’s antics promise good times and great comedic humour. Starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd and adapted from Jane Austen’s Emma by director Amy Heckerling, Clueless is in a class all its own.

2. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Written by comedic mastermind Richard Linklater, Dazed and Confused takes us back to the 70’s where hazing freshman, wandering the streets, attending parties in the bush and hooking up each other was what life was all about. Starring a whole slew of celebraties including Matthew McConaughey and Milla Jovavich, this high school comedy reminds us what it was like to be young, carefree and completely blitzed.

1. American Pie (1999)

This movie started a cult following of socially awkward successors including American Wedding and Band Camp. Unfortunately none of them compare to the high school antics of the first taste of American Pie. This legendary comedy follows the lives of four high school seniors who will try anything to get laid. Starring Jason Biggs, Eugene Levy and Seann William Scott, American Pie thrives on socially embarrassing moments, painful antics and hilarious high school banter. This movie coined the term MILF and gave a whole different meaning to home baked American pie.

Of course, in a decade obsessed with the making of adolescent angst films, there are many other worthy comedies that deserve recognition. These include Pauly Shore’s Encino Man, football classic Varsity Blues, Drew Barrymore’s Never Been Kissed, and the typecast comedy, She’s all That.
